Lifelabs, the biggest provider of community laboratory services in Canada still doesn't have multi factor authentication (MFA) when you login to check your test results at mycarecompass.lifelabs.com. (They suffered a data breach in 2019). Don't be like lifelabs; protect all your business applications with MFA. Remember, SMS multifactor authentication is inherently risky, do not use it. Use an Authenticator app instead. Call it past conditioning or societal programming, but there are times when I struggle with the thought that I'm running out of time (i.e. I'm getting "too old"). I know it's a bunch of bullshit but the thought still comes up. Anyways, over the weekend I was journaling on this in an attempt to unravel it and truthfully make it stop, when I heard a voice in my head ask me - "What if you were CURIOUS about what you could ACCOMPLISH in the next decade?" Huh? I've never had decade-long goals. But why not put some in place? I mean really the only thing I've got to lose is... the regret of not trying. So I'm leaning into discovering what I can achieve over the next ten years. It's making me feel excited. A bit nervous. But mostly empowered. Dang it's cool how deciding it's time to make a change in your old beliefs and thought patterns can open up new ideas and fresh perspectives. Sustainability isn't simple, so how do we move forward? Quebec, for example, is pushing for transparency in water usage and increasing water royalty fees. The spotlight is on major water consumers like the mining industry—essential for producing copper, a critical component in EVs, wind turbines, and the power grid. If fees on water go up, I'd assume the price for copper and the products produced from copper go up as well. ❓Here's the challenge❓: Copper is not on track to meet 2030 demand goals - we are on pace to meet only 80% of the demand. We need more copper for a greener future ♻️ , yet we need more water to collect more copper. How do we balance the need for increased resource extraction with sustainable water use to transition to a more sustainable society? Making data public, what will it change (or not change)? Earlier this year, the CBC reported on Quebec’s ruling that organizations that use at least 75,000 liters of water per day are now required to publish their water withdrawals. Two takeaways that could change how water is used in Quebec: 1️⃣ 𝗤𝘂𝗲𝗯𝗲𝗰 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗿𝗼𝘆𝗮𝗹𝘁𝘆 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻:  ▶️ Mining, pulp and paper - from $2.50 to $35 per million liters ▶️ Cement & food - from $70 to $150 per million liters industries incorporating water into products ▶️ Bottled water producers - from $70 to $500 per million liters Revenue from these fees will fund water management projects. 2️⃣ 𝗦𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱 ▶️ The water withdrawal volumes will be self-reported by industry users. BEAVER LAKE CREE NATION HAS A $150-MILLION PROBLEM. It has a housing problem. It has an education systems problem. It has an infrastructure problem. They add up to $150 million – at the low end. It also has a long-standing Constitutional problem, which has created a significant legal bill. It wants to see them all resolved – and now there may be a glimmer of hope that it can push toward resolution. It’s a case that could redefine the way indigenous communities can expect to be treated in terms of their constitutional rights. Last week, an Alberta Court of King’s Bench ruling became the latest step in a legal saga that started in 2008 when the Nation initiated court action against the federal and provincial governments, arguing under Section 35 of the Canadian Constitution its treaty rights have been violated. Into that argument is interwoven cumulative environmental impacts. In a nutshell, Beaver Lake argues unfettered industrial development on its treaty lands has negatively impacted traditional uses on that land, about one hour northeast of Edmonton. In the course of persevering in the court system, the Nation racked up some hefty legal bills and it turned to the courts for support in asking two levels of government for “advance cost” support for the litigation. The federal government stepped to the tune of $2.6 million without a court ruling it needed to. But Alberta argued otherwise – contending the Nation needed to prove "need". At stake is just how impoverished Beaver Lake really is.  And impoverished it is. Justice Bonnie Bokenfohr ruled that Alberta must now pay $1.5 million annually toward the Nation’s ongoing legal costs for its main action – a bill that at the low end will be nearly $8 million. Justice Bokenfohr found that the Nation met the “impecuniosity” threshold – that it, it satisfied the test that its day-to-day needs and the perilous state of life in the community meant it couldn’t pay out of pocket for legal action. Indeed, she wrote “With a view to all of the circumstances, I am satisfied that this is one of the rare and exceptional circumstances where to refrain from awarding advance costs would be to participate in an injustice.” Justice Bokenfohr’s ruling, at the link in the comments, should be required reading for anyone interested in critical legal principles coherently explicated. The ruling, as all good rulings ought to do, weaves a complex set of legal, political, and societal threads into a broader narrative that captures an important time-and-space place on Canada’s reconciliation landscape. It’s also an important view into the starkness of life in the Nation, where conditions are such it can barely keep its head above water. Noted the Justice: “The evidence clearly demonstrates that there is a revolving door of pressing needs that arise on a daily basis that need addressing and that are a strain on the financial resources Beaver Lake does have access to.” Karey Brooks, KC Emilia D'Anzica, MBA, PMP Nigel Bankes

Invoking Afghan refugees as a comparison to evacuating Jasper is a stretch even if the author States clearly that Canada falls under a different "high income" group. This problem of wildfires is all of our making and climate change is slapping us in the face with our inaction. Near where we live we can either have wild forests and forest fire losses OR we can have managed forests and a thriving bio economy. Both options will cost us more than zero. We need to quickly build out forest energy plants (electricity and heat generating using wood chips and pellets) to create a market for low value biomass so that we can economically reduce forest fuel loads. Oh, we can also use wood more for construction, plastic replacements, coffee cups, skateboards, etc. all while reducing fossil fuel use. https://lnkd.in/gMKG-mDQ

A gaming executive says the recent layoffs at Inflexion Games and the full closure of Humanoid Origin have been influenced by investment in gaming companies being scaled back and the ongoing absence of a tax credit program in Alberta. “It’s well known that during the course of the pandemic, interest in gaming skyrocketed, both as a business opportunity and fuelled by people consuming games at home during lockdown,” Scott Nye, the chief operating officer of Inflexion, told Taproot. “That led to a significant amount of investment. Those times of expansion, probably, were too aggressive.
